The hardest part of any healthy habit is starting. The world of fitness and health is saturated with information that can be overwhelming! If there is one thing the past few years have taught us as a society, it’s that physical health is of the utmost importance, and in turn goes hand in hand with living a better quality of life.
We here at BuzzFit know that beginning at a gym can be extremely difficult. A journey that is full of insecurities and intimidations. We’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to be this way! That’s why we’ve come up with 5 simple tips for starting at the gym that anyone can follow!
Rule Number One: Set Realistic Goals
It takes around 21 days to form a habit. This is very important to consider because most people tend to forget that change takes time. Setting realistic fitness goals at the very beginning of your journey will pave a path towards success! Many studies show that it takes 12-14 weeks to begin seeing results. So be patient, start with low weights. Plan a workout schedule that you know you can handle. Don’t put the pressure on yourself to go to the gym everyday, at first! Work into it gradually. Want to lose weight? Great! Focus on losing 2-5 pounds at a time with your goal weight in mind, as opposed to the entire amount you wish to lose! Setting attainable goals is easy.
Rule Number Two: Train With A Buddy
The buddy system is a great way to keep your gym attendance up! Of course it can be a bit daunting at first. In order to physically workout alongside a friend, there’s an air of vulnerability that most people experience. That is totally normal. In fact, it may even be a bit of a hurdle you’ll overcome while getting yourself comfortable in the gym. One thing to remember is that your friend is there for the same reasons as you, and they’re also experiencing their own version of vulnerability as well. Buddying up also comes with a boost of accountability! Nobody likes standing their friends up, especially when it comes to co-workouts!
Rule Number Three: Prioritize Form
Nothing inhibits your fitness progress like lifting with the wrong posture. It can be easy to mimic other gym-goers and the posture they choose when they lift, but what if they’re doing it wrong? Risking injury, and slowing down progress shouldn’t be a part of your workout regime.
If you’re ever unsure about form, there are tons of videos available online that teach you the proper way to do any exercise. What’s more, is that when you sign up with BuzzFit, you receive free unlimited access to our WiFi! This means, if you’re not sure about an exercise, you can use that little piece of technology called a smartphone to verify the proper way!
Rule Number Four: Ask Questions
The thing about gym culture is that everyone is usually really nice. You’d be surprised at how easily friendships can be made in gyms. Between our highly knowledgeable BuzzFit staff and members, you’ll be well taken care of. Any questions and concerns you have need not weigh on you for long when you’re at BuzzFit!
Rule Number Five: Stay Hydrated
Starting an increase in physical activity can catch your body off guard. A lot of people don’t realize that they’re already dehydrated to begin with, they’re just used to it! If you don’t prioritize drinking water before, during and after a workout session, you could run into plenty of complications! If you’re experiencing symptoms during your workout like fatigue, cramping, or notice that your heart rate has passed its maximum, it could be because you’re dehydrated. Drink up, it’s good for you!
